ORGANIC BIO-PESTICIDE AND FOLIAR FEED FORMULATION

Organic bio-pesticides are natural substances used to protect plants from pests without harming the environment, soil, or human health. Organic foliar feed is a liquid nutrient spray made from natural materials like Tithonian leaves and fresh cow dung.

Organic bio-pesticides 

Are Pest control products derived from natural materials like micro-organisms plants or certain minerals. They are used to manage pest and diseases offering a potentially more environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticide.

Requirements 

  • Mexican marigold 
  • Garlic
  • Hot chili (pepper) 
  • Water 
  • Clean stones 
  • Bucket with lid
  • Sieve 
  • Spray pump

Procedure 

  • Crush or grind the Mexican marigold, garlic, and chili together into a fine paste using clean stones.
  • Put the paste into a bucket and add of water. Stir well
  • Cover the bucket loosely and let it sit in a shaded area for 4 days to ferment.
  • Use a fine cloth or sieve to filter out solid particles. This prevents the sprayer from clogging.

Application 

  • Pour the strained liquid into a spray bottle or pump and spray directly on the affected plants, especially under the leaves where pests hide.
    Best time to spray: early morning or late evening.

Organic foliar feed

There are two types of organic foliar feeds;

  • Made from cow dung
  • Made from Tithonian plant 

Cow dung foliar

A liquid fertilizer made from fresh cow dung, designed to be sprayed directly onto the leaves(foliage) of plants. It provides nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients to crops through the leaves instead of the soil.

Ingredients

  • Fresh cow dung 
  • Water
  • Clean bucket  

Procedure 

  • In a large bucket mix fresh cow dung with water in a ratio of 1:3
  • Stir the mixture until it becomes uniform, no particle felt
  • Cover the container with a lid and keep it a shaded place
  • Continue stirring the mixture daily to ensure proper fermentation and aeration 
  • Allow the mixture to ferment for 7 days 
  • After 7 days, strain the liquid using a fine clot to remove particles

Application

  • Dilute the fermented liquid with water at a ratio of 1:5. 
  • Each plant to receive 250ml of the dilution.

Tithonian foliar

Refers to liquid feed made from tithonia leaves applied to plants to boost plant growth, increase yield and help control pest or disease.

Ingredients 

  • Tithonia leaves
  • Water 
  • Bucket 

Procedure 

  • Chop tithonia leaves into small particles
  • Add chopped tithonia into the bucket of water
  • Place the bucket under a shade
  • Leave it to ferment for 7 days
  • Sieve using a cloth to separate particles with the foliar

Application  

  • Mix the product with water at a ratio of 1:10
  • Apply 250ml to each crop
