SANI-Kenya began as a result of research carried out in 2016 by our Co-Founder and Board Member Dr. Constance Gewa that examined rates of food security in Seme sub-county. Her research found that 60% of the households there were food insecure.

We developed SANI-Kenya to develop programmes that would address the causes of this high level of food insecurity in a sustainable and scalable way.

OUR PROGRAMMES

SANI-Kenya provides smallholder farmers – mostly women – educational training and field extension services. We currently work in Kisumu County in Western Kenya, in the communities of West Othany and Kit-Mikayi in Seme sub-county.

SANI-Kenya staff provide initial training and support. We also use the Trainer of Trainers model, developing a network of Lead Farmers, each of whom has approximately 10 farmers in her group. Working with our staff, SANI-Kenya’s Lead Farmers provide follow-up training and technical support as well as demonstrations and reviews.
Our programmes focus on agriculture, nutrition, livelihoods, and other areas to strengthen their food and nutrition security. We currently have 500 participants, mostly women, meaning our programs are impacting over 2500 women, children, and other household members.

SANI-Kenya farmers learn to raise nutritious, climate resilient traditional African green vegetables, tubers, and grains including African nightshade, crotolaria, cassava, orange-flesh sweet potatoes, and sorghum.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

To help address the ever-growing challenges presented by climate change, we teach farmers different technologies to strengthen food security. For example, we introduced multi-story gardens, an agricultural method that allows farmers to grow more crops in smaller spaces with less water.

We also train farmers to preserve vegetables, so they have vegetables to feed their families even after harvest.

In addition to crops, we are training farmers in improved methods for raising poultry, which can provide them an important source of income. Further, poultry require little water, making them ideally suited to the arid conditions where we work.

The result of SANGO-Kenya’s comprehensive programs is that farmers can feed their families more nutritious food, save money, and even have surplus to sell to increase their income.
